Kindergarten and Year One were fortunate to have a visit by Kel, Charlotte, Graham, Pat Katryn and Rob from the Broulee Rural Fire Service on Friday. The children were fantastic at remembering what to do if a fire should occur - to ring 000 and state their name, address and type of emergency and to get down low and go go go if there is smoke.
Practising crawling through the smoke house gave us all a good idea of what it would be like if there was a fire, and learning about the firetruck, climbing through it and watching the water cannon fire water so high up gave us great insight into what it would be like to be a firefighter. Thanks so much to the team at Broulee RFS for taking the time to visit us. As part of our Literacy program, we have been focussing on good old fashioned nursery rhymes. Nursery Rhymes are great to immerse children in the rhythm and intonation of language and are fabulous for rhyme, alliteration and syllabification. Each class has explored: Humpty Dumpty, Hickory Dickory Dock and Baa Baa Black Sheep. Students have had a great time learning, or re-visiting, each one and figuring out which words rhyme, which words begin with the same sound, singing, asking questions, creating and making up their own versions. You can follow up at home by reciting these Nursery Rhymes with your child and sharing in their delight in hearing rhyming words. Each Wednesday, the children rotate through our Kindergarten classrooms for PDHPE and Geography sessions. Part of this rotation includes a session in Mindfulness, where the children are introduced to developmentally appropriate mindful practices. These skills and practices are further developed in class time during the week. Last week, we focused on bubbles. We observed how bubbles are formed, how they move, what causes them to move. and how they pop and go away. The children then made bubbles with their own bodies and noticed their breath within these bubbles. They then moved around the hall being careful not to touch the bubbles of others, increasing their awareness of body and self. |
